10 Books that Every Woman should Read

A good book has the power to change someone’s ability to think. It can teach valuable lessons that can change your life or provide you with some fantasy to survive your reality and give you some break from your daily routine. Here is a list of some books that every woman should read, though people of any gender can enjoy these stories.

 

You are a badass by Jen Sincero

Consider this book as the ultimate confidence booster, making it a must-read for women. In this book, Jen Sincero talks about the things that are stopping you from your greatness and how do you get over those things. If you want to start with ‘self-help’ books, then this is a perfect choice, or even if you have been reading ‘self-help’ books, then it can provide you with some fresh perspectives.

A room of one’s own is a collection of two letters or essays that were put together by Virginia Woolf. The book talks about the differences in household work and how women need their own space in order to write. The essay is generally seen as a feminist text and is noted in its argument for both a literal and figural space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by patriarchy.

Little women by Louisa May Alcott

The story in Little Women takes place during the American Civil War and the central focus point of the story is the March family. More specifically the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. The four sisters live with their mother while their father is gone for war. Meg, the oldest sister, is the prettiest, Jo is kind of tom-boyish, Beth is very shy and musical and Amy, who is the youngest, loves to draw. The book deals with the different aspects of life led in the 1800s, making it as another book that every woman should read.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

This is one of the most widely read British classic novels. This story is about a family called the Bennett’s which consists of Mr Bennett and Mrs Bennett and their five children, all girls. The novel revolves around the second oldest child, Elizabeth Bennett. Mrs Bennett wants all her girls to get married and live a happy and better life. Though the story is about two warring hearts, Jane Austen has done beautiful work in capturing the essence of life in the 18th century in England.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

In the book, Michelle Obama talks about her life right from her childhood to the time when she becomes the first Lady of the United States. This book gives an insight into the major decisions, challenges and events of her life. Even though this is a non-fiction book, this seems like a very interesting story because of how articulate Michelle Obama has been. The book is not completely about politics, it also has some different interesting aspects.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

This is a non-fiction book and it contains the diary entries of a Jewish girl named Anne Frank. So Anne Frank was alive during the time of World War II and since she was a Jew, she had to go into hiding along with her family. This book is brimming with life lessons. Anne Frank is a very optimistic person, full of positivity and hope. Her hopes are reflected in this book and what was her feelings towards living a restricted life in the hiding.

The handmaid’s tale by Margaret Atwood

This book totally lives up to its genre which is dystopian. The story takes place in the Republic of Gilead. The entire social structure has been changed and definitely not for the better. The women have been stripped of all their rights and they have been divided into certain categories. Offred is a Handmaid, in the home of the Commander. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant because, in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. This is yet another book that every woman should read.

To kill a mocking bird by Harper Lee

A Lawyer’s advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee’s classic novel—a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with rich humour and unwavering honesty the irrationality of adult attitudes toward race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. Scout is a child and because of that, her opinions are not burdened with any Biasness Or prejudices.

We should all be feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This book is very easy to read. The best thing about this book is that it’s not preachy, it doesn’t preach to you about feminism or why we should all be feminists. What the author has done is, she has recounted an experience from her own life and through this, she has tried to point out sexism, stereotypes and so on. This is a great book for beginners especially if you new to the concept of feminism and would like to know more about it.
